Can You Install Bigger Wheels On The Lawnmower?

When you talk about putting larger wheels on your lawnmower, you need to consider some variables. I am trying to discuss them in detail.

Riding VS Push lawnmower:

Well, the first thing you need to consider when you are talking about putting larger wheels on a lawnmower is the route and weight of your lawnmower. If you own a push mower, then you don’t need to worry about your lawnmower weight. Putting a larger wheel in your lawnmower can be a bit difficult though.

On the other hand, the riding lawnmower offers you selecting a wheel from many options. So, putting larger wheels on a push lawnmower is much easier than riding a lawnmower.

Whatever you need to ensure that the tire you are going to put is rated for your lawnmower types as it is not interchangeable.

Size of the Wheel:

Well, you are supposed to understand that the larger wheels are both wider and taller for accomodating more weight. As a result, you need to enhance the size of the axle for leaving some space for wheels. In this case, you can choose wheels according to the same breadth and you will be able to put the wheel under the same given axle.

Whatsoever, If you own a riding lawnmower, you need to confirm that the wheels should fit in your mower. If the wheel doesn’t fit, then you will be unable to install the wheel.

Deck clearance:

After installing larger wheels, the minimum height of your mower will be raised. As a result, you will be unable to cut small grass that is very low for cutting using a push mower. On the other hand, you can adjust the compromise with the deck for balancing the difference on a riding lawnmower.

However, it is not supposed to be a problem if you want to keep the mower thick. But, if you wish to cut the grass which is very low, then you will not be able to do so.

Pros & Cons of Putting Larger Wheels

Pros

  • Improved traction: Well, putting larger wheels have some exclusive positive points. Among them, the mentionable one is improved traction control. Sometimes you may have to drive your mower over rocky terrain or snow and so on. In this kind of situation, the larger wheels will provide you a better traction experience.
  • Smoother Maneuvering: This one is especially for the push mower. Usually, the push lawnmower is hard to make a move with the smaller wheels. Putting larger wheels on the lawnmower will offer you better-adapting capability while controlling the mower.

Cons

  • Limitation in cutting options: I have already talked about it. Although there is an option for adjusting the deck of both riding and pushing the mower, it will reach into its minimal height. Resulting, you will not be able to reach the grasses which are very short.
  • Limitations in having turn: lawnmower with smaller wheels is a bit hard to take a 180-degree turn. This problem can be solved by putting larger wheels.
  • Less amount of suction: As you will be adjusting your deck, the mower blades will not hold the capability of directing a good amount of grass into the bag.
